Post Race Blues
Post race blues are real, they happen. It’s quite natural that regardless of the result of your race, you feel a little bit lost once it’s all over.
So, how do we combat these blues? That dreaded answer… it depends. But it’s true. I would love to be able to provide you with a magic spell that will lift your mood post-race, but that just isn’t life. We all experience ups and downs, all handle situations differently, and all find joy and happiness in different ways.
But here are 3 are things that you might like to consider.
1. Have another race already in the calendar
For some, this is a risky one, as they bounce from one hard event to another. That is not what I am getting at here. But sometimes simply knowing a timeframe for your next goal (even if that is 12 months away) can really help mentally.
2. Find joy
This can be taking yourself away from your previous training regime and jumping into another spot/activity that you love, but recently haven’t had time for. Or finding joy could be the complete opposite. Maybe the last thing you want to do is to remove yourself from your current training circles. If that is the case, become the pacer or helper! People will love that you are still showing up the group sessions and willing to help out.
3. Avoid making rash decisions
This one is often more likely to occur when a race has not gone to plan. You feel that you want to rectify it immediately! Just hold off; there is no need to book another race instantly. Your body needs the time to recover, and you do not need to justify anything in another race or punish yourself here.
Lastly, if you cannot shake the blues, please know that you are not alone. Many people experience this, please reach out to your coach or a trusted friend and open up to them. They will likely be able to help you see some next steps that might start sparking some excitement again.
